The invention relates to a power distribution system and, more particularly, to a power distribution system that is adapted to balance the current drawn from a main power source.
2. Background of the Invention
Electronic devices are typically powered from a main power source. To minimize power loss, some electronic devices are designed to draw the maximum current they will use from the main power source when the electronic device is switched on. However, the main power source may not be adequate to supply the maximum amount of current that a particular device may require, and a secondary power source may be used to supply the necessary amount of current. Accordingly, the secondary power source is turned on and off in response to the switch on and off signals from the main power source, thereby enabling the secondary power source to supply the maximum amount of current when required.
The switch on/off signals from the main power source are usually transmitted in the form of electrical power. For example, in a home power supply, power is transmitted from the main power source to a load through a main breaker, and the breaker is usually closed when the electronic device is turned on. When the electronic device is turned off, the main breaker is opened to interrupt power to the load. Consequently, the load is powered by the secondary power source for a portion of the time that the electronic device is off. However, a minor portion of the time that the electronic device is off, the load is powered by the main power source. The secondary power source is essentially a reserve power source to supply the load with the maximum amount of current for the entire period when the electronic device is on.
While the reserve power source is a practical solution to the problem of providing the maximum amount of current for the load when required, the reserve power source may consume additional energy. For example, in a home power supply, when the load is not activated for a period of time, a portion of the reserve power source is used. The reserve power source is a "fallback" power source that is used when the main power source fails, and thus, the reserve power source is only used for a minor portion of the time.
