The present invention relates to a medical device for managing an airway, preferably a laryngeal airway, to support a patient in a prone position during medical procedures.
During medical procedures on a patient in the prone position, it is desirable to ensure that the patient's airway is secured. Currently, there are a number of known devices for securing a patient's airway. One such device is a laryngeal airway, which is known to be useful in conducting endotracheal intubation. Laryngeal airways typically include an elongated tube portion and a connector. The elongated tube portion is inserted into the patient's airway and the connector is typically used to connect the airway to a ventilator. Typically, a laryngeal airway is used in medical procedures requiring intubation, such as endotracheal intubation. The laryngeal airway serves as a conduit to the patient's trachea and typically includes an inflatable cuff which seals the airway opening during insertion and removal.
The above-described devices for securing a patient's airway, however, typically do not secure the patient in the prone position. Thus, in order to provide further protection of the airway during medical procedures in the prone position, a medical professional typically places a standard pillow between the patient's face and the device, such as a laryngeal airway. A patient with a laryngeal airway is able to communicate with medical professionals due to the visual and tactile communications provided through the laryngeal airway. However, a patient with a standard pillow placed between the patient's face and the laryngeal airway is not able to communicate with medical professionals. Thus, the use of a standard pillow renders the laryngeal airway less effective in securing the patient's airway.
Accordingly, it is desirable to provide a laryngeal airway for securing the patient's airway in the prone position, while enabling the patient to communicate with medical professionals. It is further desirable to provide a laryngeal airway that is adjustable to various sizes of patients.1. Field of the Invention
