Android is a Linux-based mobile operating system developed by Google, based on the Linux kernel and other technologies, originally targeted at devices such as the Nexus One. It is available for various devices including smartphones, tablets, set-top boxes, watches, TVs, game consoles, and computers. It is the world's most widely used mobile operating system, and it competes with iOS for the number one spot.
The most commonly used programming language for Android is Java, while others such as C and C++ are also used. The Android Native Development Kit (NDK) allows developers to use their preferred programming language to write Android apps without needing to learn Java.
Android is free and open-source software distributed under the Apache 2.0 license. Google provides access to most source code and documentation under the Apache License 2.0. Other parties have also published their work as open-source under the Apache License 2.0.
Android's architecture also provides for the ability to use non-free, proprietary software components. This includes the Google Play store for app distribution and the Google Play Services for network infrastructure.
Android is usually installed on a smartphone, tablet, television, or other device, with the Android Home screen displaying user interface elements, such as apps, widgets, and home screens. Android devices may be referred to as Android-powered devices, Android-based devices, Android-compatible devices, or simply Android phones or tablets.
A user can select an app to open a desktop-like interface, referred to as a window, which provides an environment in which the app can be used. For example, the user can type text in a web browser or play games using a game emulator. Android includes a bundled web browser, referred to as the Android Browser, which is based on the open source WebKit layout engine. Other applications can be used to interact with the user and the system, including the in-built Calculator, Maps, Alarm Clock, Voice Recorder, Calendar, Music Player, Weather, and Email applications.
Android's user interface is based on the touchscreen, using the on-screen virtual keyboard as a replacement for the physical keyboard, allowing users to input text and data via a touch screen.
Android supports features such as multitouch and multiwindow. For example, a user can have two apps open on the screen, on different windows. In multiwindow mode, the user can drag an app's window on top of another app's window.
